I had the opportunity to link up with Roy Martin, the Modern English drummer from 1986-1990, via email and sent him rather a long list of questions which he answered really quickly. The first set of questions were on the Stop Start tour (which you can view here imeltwithyou.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=stopstart&action=display&thread=90 and the second set of questions were on the recording and tour of Pillow Lips (answers below)
Email Interview of Roy Martin – Modern English drummer 1986-1990
Pillow Lips Recording the album and doing the Tour
1. The band partially reformed for the Pillow Lips album and you were brought in as the drummer. Do you remember how this came about?
Answer: Not really but I had stayed in touch and that was the next thing they did after Stop Start, so I guess I was the natural choice to have do the record.
2. As the drummer for the recording sessions were you involved in the writing or development of the songs or were they brought to you completed?
Answer: They were completed before we got in the studio I think
3. What memories do you have of recording the album? Were there any tracks you particularly liked?
Answer: I don’t remember much about the recording. I remember that it was a nice experience but I was just there to do my tracks which maybe took 5 days and then I left them to it. I always thought Life’s Rich Tapestry was a great song and I enjoyed Coming Up For Air as well.
4. Were you the drummer for the Pillow Lips tour?
Answer: That tour was split up into 2 parts and I couldn’t do half of it due to a prior commitment but I did the 1st half and it was a lot of fun.
5. A live version of the track ‘Pillow Lips’ was released on a CD single. Do you know if any full concerts were recorded and any details about them?
Answer: I think a Boston Radio Station recorded one show which was broadast live, also a San Francisco radio show which we did on a boat in San Francisco Bay.
