I hope more fans vote for their fav single of M E. I'm always curious why? Some times there is a good story or something that makes me love a song more. So I hope fans can post a little something something on why they chose the single that they chose as their favourite M E single.
Since I'm a fairly new fan. I can't choose a fav. album yet. Still finishing the Mesh And Lace album. Bounced around a little and still listening to my all time favourite song not just of M E, but Fav Song Of All Time, so far. I don't know if there is a song that can possibly eclipse or surpass I Melt With You. For me anyways, I don't think there ever will be as I slowly listen to music I never heard before by M E. Lots of good songs with great lyrics, wow!
But I think I Melt With You will always be my favourite song. I was 10 yrs. old when I first heard I Melt With You on the radio. Campus Community Radio hasn't got it's license yet where I live and DJs back in the day got a lot more freedom to play new and up and coming bands, not like today where it's all made to have a formatted playlist. I remember the lyrics, "Dream of better lives, the kind which never hate" and "I made a pilgrimage to save this human's race" made such a profound impact on my young self that I automatically thought of it as a peace song. A year later I saw that Valley Girl movie. It felt like forever in the movie that they played that song (go figure, they played the entire song twice in the movie, has any other movie ever done that?) and I didn't really get how it fit in the movie at the time since I thought of it as a peace song and not also as a love song as much. 11 yrs old. I didn't know anything about love at the time. Sadly it didn't take till adulthood & reading an interview that Robbie Grey did saying that, that song is about a couple making love that it clued in as a love song as well x) ^^U
I never got to see the MV for it when I was younger, always missed it somehow. It charted at #5 or #7, something like that in the top ten on one of those MV shows. MuchMusic would still be a couple years later. Hands Across The Sea got good air play on MV shows when it came out. Later Robbie did a station ID for MuchMusic. Didn't see no interview or anything. Remember seeing a MV for Someone's Calling and probably Chapter 12 and hearing Move In Light on the radio but never put the connection of that it's the same band that also did that song (IMWY). To me, M E was that off the radar band that didn't really get as much airplay as they probably should have in the 80s since IMWY interestingly enough is the theme song to the 80s wouldn't you agree?
Several years pass by, 18 yr old self and M E re-released IMWY in a more beatbox oriented sound. A DJ played it on his show and totally slammed the IMWY re-release. I forgave M E for it, still love the original, so I let it go. Could of used more acoustic guitar and lots of synth instead of the over powering beatbox kind of like youtu.be/jCJ7vnKYcnU with the very happypower of the 1990 re-release and I think it would have been amazing
I stopped watching t.v. around my 20s but occasionally watched music shows though and I finally got a chance to see the IMWY MV during one of these 80s retro special I think I was in my late 20s, I saw that song in a Burger King commercial and my heart just sank NOOO… That song that shaped my young self of a better way of thinking was going to be thought of by the new generation as that giant tasty burger that you eat on a weekend, sitting at a bench, tapping the belly and giggling because can't believe ate something that naughty. That peace song that I so love is now replaced by images of flying beef patties and sliced cheese. Then I saw a Ritz commercial, then a SUV commercial with that song. I just thought to myself, Robbie can you stab my heart some more X'( I felt cynical at that point. My friend and I had a conversation about social issues once and he mention that things were getting better and I automatically referred it to that song with the lyrics "you've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time" I no longer really believe in that so I tried to sway my friend to the cynical dark side, but he wasn't having it. Disagreement, awkward time, but it all sorted itself out because we are good friends ^^ I couldn't have these not so good feelings about the song that I love and respected so much growing up that I had to find an understanding, some kind of hope to be able to love the song the way I did so long ago.
A few weeks ago, I looked up the MV on Youtube and Behold! a live performance of the original members caught my eye. I clicked on to it and the first thing Robbie mentioned was that song, the one in the BK commercial (audience giggles), it paid the F ing bills. Ok, I forgive you Robbie, since it probably kept the band afloat and eventually be able to get back together. I found peace and loved that song again.
Someone had a different version of that BK commercial on Youtube. I still can't watch it, even today without feeling wounded, but I'm a little more understanding about it now. Don't mind it in movies, because they seem to always put that song in a really good way in the movie. Once at a wedding and once at a party. I don't remember the movies that I saw at the theatre that, that song was in. Didn't see that I Melt With You movie yet (I think it was in Very limited or straight to DVD release or I would have caught it in some art house theatre or something), but I'm sure they put the song in a good part of the movie. Just not too keen on that song in commercials which M E probably gets good royalties from because it's probably aired a lot, but it's ok lah. As long as M E stays afloat and comes out with a lot of great tunes for a very long time, I'll be happy. I do love M&Ms though. Curious to know what that commercial looks like. Tried to check it out on the net and couldn't find it anywhere. Also the T mobile one? I'm kind of curious, because I'm thinking the videographers must have made a really romantic commercial for it. My nephew has a young girl chasing after him. Well, he gets lots of the cute girls chasing after him, but this one particular girl went above and beyond. She called him from her cellphone when she was in Paris and he was in the Philippines at the time. She said to him, "I just called because I wanted to hear your voice". They talked for about an hour or something. I can just imagine how much that cellphone bill was. Lucky kid. I'm thinking the commercial is something like that. Because it was Nouvelle Vague that did the cover which I think is really romantic, so I'm thinking that T mobile? one is… I hope… ^^U
Now as a new fan of M E. Reading all these interviews and watching all these MVs, performances of M E as much as I can when time allows is really amazing to me. All because I love that song. That song about peace that had this profound meaning to me to go out there and make this world a better place as much as possible. Not just the big major ones, but the small ones are the ones that count the most. Because it's the everyday life. I'm really sensitive and come down really harsh when someone does something not really in a good way. ie. If you wait in a busy line up at lunch at a Burger King, you'll be surprised to hear not very many people genuinely smiling at the BK employee, saying please, then thank you in the end in a sincere way and not that obligated way that sounds just as rude as not saying please, then thank you at the end properly. I'm still not that good at it myself, but occasionally I see the smile coming back to me on someone's face because I did my best to create a positivity than that negativity that I see in a lot of people that looks like they are going to explode if things aren't done to their satisfaction. I try to be as good as I can about it and let it go as much as possible and try not to look the negative way I feel in my head. Most of the times the results are good and I get treated better. A genuine smile goes a long way, better service at restaurants. Other people that work in the same building as me don't look too irritated as much as they use to when I see them. It's a good thing too. Holy cow did it take a long time, but eventually they cave in and a smile comes back and when I screw up at work, they aren't as harsh with me ^^U Smiles are contagious. When you smile at someone, someone generally smiles back and probably has good thoughts going around in their heads afterwards. That timeless saying, "Lead by example" If you give good positivity to create a peaceful surrounding, you'll affect others and it becomes a positive cycle around you. Well, at least most of the times… Most is better than none ^^U Creating a positive environment is what that song has taught and reminds me every time I hear it. Now it also reminds me to love and be loved too. A song about Peace And Love. How many songs can you name that has to me two of the most important things in life? I can't name any. I can name lots of songs that has peace or love as a theme, but not both. That is why that song will probably always remain My Fav Song Of All Time. Vote for your fav M E single and please share why? I'm sure there is a great story there that will make fans fall in love/fall in love again with that song.
...Drowning Man / Silent World still remains my favorite 7"... Really a pity that after 33 yrs(!), those 2 tracks still have never been reissued / included anywhere. The original 7" fetches a pretty high price nowadays in the second-hand market...
We survived The Apocalypse XD Well, still early evening here, but I'm sure its safe to say we survived x) Another year of music true music fans aren't going to think is that great till three decades later maybe.
Thanks Yeah. I just listened to the Drowning Man 7" on here. It's interesting. I really love the guitar parts in the end. I like Silent World too ^^ I like what the reviewer wrote about the 7". Typical music snoot x)
Maybe M E can make a limited re-release? I don't know how the logistics work, but I'm sure 100 copy limited re-release would be economically ok. Or if it's just the mp3… I don't know how they do the album covers for downloads works… I think those are really neat and I like the multimedia downloads. I've only seen it on K Pop music and I think one English Pop mp3 about a year or two ago. I think its fan made. A multimedia artist that was also a fan of a music artist must have created a multimedia mp3 program. Those ones with the album cover art and when you press the home button or touch screen of your Iphone, the lyrics pop up. It's way cool. I really like it because I don't have to keep on searching for the lyrics on the net. I believe it is probably more economical to do an mp3 multimedia version of Drowning Man. I really love the 7" art work cover. I think it really matches well with the mood of the song. Maybe multimedia artists will do flip pages on mp3s, so you can see the front, back cover of vinyl copies of music, liner notes and lyrics… I think it will happen and it's going to be most amazing. Or are you planning to hopefully get the original 7" sometime? I think it does make a great collectors.
I'm sorry, I just read the thread ^^U Well, I still recommend the above. When they make those multimedia mp3s are amazing. I'm sure they are going to get better. As far as the Duran Duran releases on ITunes. They are signed on by Apple exclusively. It would be great if Modern English can get the same kind of distribution... They have their MVs on sale on ITunes but not IMWY for some reason... Anyone know anything about how the ITunes thing works? I would love to download the first single and demo songs off ITunes and it would be great if it is a multimedia mp3 because I love the art work and lyrics ^^
